Beautiful Amalfi Coast – As Long As You Don`t Get Car Sick!

Sunday we traveled from Rome to Amalfi by train and bus. Both were not great if you get car sick! I just about puked on the bus ride to Amalfi, the roads are narrower than they were on the road to Hana in Maui. I also just about throttled a tourist who decided he needed to video record everything in the seat in front of us. Once we arrived in Amalfi we had to hop another bus for 10 minutes to get to our little apartment. When we arrived and met our agent I was a little worried when we walked down about 100 really steep steps to get to our apartment as I thought we were going to have to walk back up those every time we wanted to go somewhere. As it turns out our apartment is beautiful, the best place on our trip! It is a loft with a full living room and kitchen as well! And you don’t walk up the steps, you take a different route to go down the hill and meet up with a bus stop or as we have done just walk back into town. It is absolutely beautiful here and only raining on and off.





Monday we toured Amalfi further and booked an excursion to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvio for Wednesday and tried to book an excursion to the Island Capri, but were not successful as the swell on the ocean had been preventing many boats from going out. In the afternoon we travelled to Positano to tour another Amalfi Coast town. There we ran into an Australian couple that we had met on our bus to Amalfi on Sunday and they had booked an excursion to Capri for Tuesday through another company so we went and checked them out. Positano was a very cute little beach town probably entirely tourism focused. We were going to head to Ravello as well, but after an hour and a half wait for the next bus back to Amalfi and a royal rumble/free for all to get on the bus (Danielle wanted to throw elbows & punches!) we made our way back to Amalfi in standing room only and beside one girl that clutched her used puke bag while her friend asked her for the bag as they were not feeling well either!!



Tuesday morning we awoke to clear blue skies and sunshine on the way to the best weather day of our trip. The company out of Amalfi continued not to send boats to Capri, so we jumped on the bus to Positano and took that excursion and met up again with our new found friends Tim & Catherine! We had a fabulous day where we boated around the entire island stopping at the white, green & blue grotto’s! Unfortunately the swell was still to high which prevented us from going into the blue grotto, but we bought a postcard that shows how amazing it is! Once we ported we went and had lunch then grabbed a convertible taxi up to Anacapri where we took a chairlift up to the highest peak of the island that provides an unreal view of the Bay of Naples. This was an unreal day and by far the best weather we have seen. Upon returning to Positano we grabbed a drink with Tim & Catherine and then wished them the best (hoping that we may have a trip to Australia sometime in our future where we could meet up again)!









Wednesday we left from Amalfi on our tour to Pompeii. The bus was a few minutes late and the guide was a 70+ year old man with many quirks, so the start was not great! We spent about 2 hours at Pompeii, where I think you could spend much more time and learn much more, but we saw an amphitheatre, 2 squares, a large home, a bath house, a brothel and a farmers market among the excavated streets from numerous volcanic eruptions from Mount Vesuvio from 79 A.D. to the last eruption of 1944. The trip to the Volcano involved a short steep hike to see the crater of Mount Vesuvio which was mostly covered by clouds, so picture taking was not great. Unfortunately the cloud also prevented views of the city of Naples and Bay of Naples below that based on postcards are spectacular! Thursday we will take the ferry to Salerno, train to Rome and plane to Athens for a one night stay prior to flying to Crete for 5 days. Ciao
